Cable and satellite providers routinely use compression techniques on channels to increase the amount of channels they can carry without buying more necessary equipment. When that happens, it is not true HD, although they continue to claim and advertise that they are delivering HD.
They should be required to state, at the beginning of every program, how much compression is applied, and how close (or not) the program is to being true, uncompressed HD.
Consumers have a right to know what they are paying for, and this would encourage competition among the industry.
