Thomas Jefferson said that "the tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants" and Crispus Attucks, a former slave, was"the first to pour out his blood as a precious libation on the altar of a people's rights." He was the first casualty of the American Revolution, yet he remains a footnote, a "by the way" mention in our history classes, an utter shame but indicative of how our nation treats the historic contributions of people of color. Given the recent criticisms of those who would protest injustice and the blood still being shed, more than ever we must be reminded that this nation was born from protest and give honor to those, especially the unsung, who have given their blood for the "tree of liberty." It is time for that tree to bear fruit!
