The collection of data on the internet is growing in breadth and scope at an alarming rate. Presently, the only measure of protection for consumers is the privacy policy. However, this measure acts more in the interest of the company than the consumer. Current privacy policies are carefully worded such that the burden of proof is on the consumer if they believe their privacy has been invaded. Effectively, by agreeing to a privacy policy and using a website, you waive any legal right to hold the company responsible should their data security be compromised. In the face of growing data collection and consolidation among internet companies, current regulations become a liability for consumers.
