Cut Down on Lockdown

Created by A.F. on November 28, 2016

Solitary Confinement is ineffective, counterproductive, unsafe, and inhumane. It causes people detained in these conditions to deteriorate psychologically, physically, and socially. Long-term isolation costs too much, does nothing to rehabilitate prisoners, and exacerbates mental illness - or even causes mental illness in prisoners who were otherwise healthy when they entered solitary. However, we acknowledge that solitary confinement is necessary in certain situations. As social workers, we want to advocate for proper training and regulation of solitary standards in those situations. We recommend a prison intervention program led by a team of professions to lead this change.
