The U.S. Department of Justice has requested $8.6 billion for its fiscal year 2013 budget for the Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP). The BOP's budget is one of the largest for any single federal agency.
This money is primarily used to house--not rehabilitate--offenders. And many of these "offenders" are incarcerated solely because of our failed "War on Drugs."
The American economy is in dire straights. We need jobs, not more prisons. Let's cut the BOP's budget through "smart on crime" initiatives, and use the money we save to rebuild our economy and to provide jobs to Americans who need them.
