Currently the US spends $680 billion on the military, more than any other discretionary spending item, and more than the next 15 countries combined. Our military spending accounts for 40% of global military spending, and at nearly 5% of GDP it is bankrupting the country. When discussions about balancing the budget and reducing the deficit occur, the military is the first spending item which must be slashed. No other spending cuts should be considered until cuts to the Pentagon are agreed to.
