Our government leaders are paid too much for a job done poorly. The president makes 400k a year, and nearly 200k a year after he's gone. 535 Congressmen receive 174k a year. The poverty line is roughly 22k for a four member family. Far too many Americans are under that line. Ever joked "let Congress work minimum wage for awhile and see how fast things get fixed"? Well, now we say it out loud. They are in the top 10% of our income earners for working less than 2/3 of the year. They campaign, party, and play on the American peoples' time and dollar. I propose: a salary at the present national average for all of Congress (about 47k), with a x1.5 and x2 multiplier for VP and President. They expect the American people to survive on it, they can too. Its not billions of dollars, but its a start.
