Voting is the most fundamental element of a participatory democracy. So why do we make it so hard for our citizens to perform this basic civic duty? The simple step of establishing Election Day as a national holiday will remove some obstacles that keep busy Americans away from the polls. It will also serve as a symbol to remind people just how important their participating in this democracy is.
