Declare Election Days to be Recognized as National Holidays

Regardless of race, religion, or political party, Americans as a nation should be embarrassed with our history's voting participation. With congressional elections unable to coax out 50% of registered voters and presidential elections struggling to maintain more than 55% of the population each election season, it is clear something needs to be done. In order for our 238 year old experiment called democracy to properly function officials chosen by the people should not only reflect the ideas and viewpoints of half the country. A government of the people, by the people, for the people requires civic engagement of its citizens on a consistent basis. Declaring election days to be recognized as national holidays could provide a key stepping stone for improved voter turnout, and even politics.
