The fact that the Constitution is written in English implicitly sets it as the United States' official language. Currently, English is the de facto language rather than the official one; making it the official language is a symbolic change only.
Knowledge of multiple languages is not to be discouraged in any way. This petition merely seeks to encourage competency in English to facilitate communication among all Americans, and to encourage new immigrants to learn English in addition to their native tongues.
