Declare that January 1st, be a Federal holiday to commemorate the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation.

Created by D.C. on January 01, 2015

The Emancipation Proclamation, was issued by President Abraham Lincoln, on January 1st, 1863. It proclaimed the freedom of slaves in the ten states that were still in rebellion during the American Civil War. Although this proclamation did not officially outlaw slavery, or grant citizenship to the freedmen, it was a bold and critical step towards the eradication of slavery, and the unfair treatment and dehumanization of African-African's. Although slavery has been abolished since December 6, 1865, African-American's are still affected mentally, emotionally and physically. Furthermore, we as African-American's, celebrate the Independence Day, which is a Federal holiday marked to commemorate our country's independence from Great Britain, which took place on July 4th, 1776. But, we were slaves
