Declare January 6, 2012 as a national night of luminaria in honor of New Mexico's 100th anniversary of statehood.

Created by M.A. on December 03, 2011

On January 6, 1912, New Mexico became the 47th state of the United States of America. Friday January 6, 2012 marks the beginning of a year-long celebration of New Mexico’s 100th anniversary of admission into the Union. We are asking people everywhere to help launch this celebration by displaying luminaria, a quintessential New Mexican custom.

A luminaria is a small paper sack with a candle inside. For centuries, the people of New Mexico have adorned their homes and walkways with luminaria to celebrate joyous occasions and holidays. We are asking Americans across the country to do the same.

By making January 6, 2012 a national night of luminaria, the people of the United States can share in the beauty of the American Southwest and join in celebration with the great State of New Mexico
