Harvey Bernard Milk was born on May 22, 1930. In 1978 he ran for City Supervisor of San Francisco, and became the first openly-gay man to hold public office, and worked his way up to be the Martin Luther King Jr. of the Gay community. He was known as the "Mayor of Castro Street"
On November 22, 1978, Harvey Milk along with Mayor George Moscone were assassinated by a fellow Supervisor who resigned, changed his mind when wanted his job back, but was refused by Mayor Moscone.
In the wake of their assassination, thousands gathered in a peaceful march down Castro St. to City Hall to mourn their passing. In San Francisco, "Harvey Milk Day" was established in California in 2009 by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger for remembering a man who stood up to intolerance and equality for the few.
