Declare the metric system the official system of measurements of the United States

With nearly the entire world using the metric system as the standard for measurements, including the United States scientific community, it is time that we put the archaic and arbitrary imperial system of measurements to rest and embrace the universal system.
Tourism will become less bothersome for both Americans leaving the country and foreigners entering, the process of unit conversion would no longer be necessary and communication of distances and general quantities will become more fluid.
Please, take the time to implement this simple idea which would have a permanent, positive impact on the American way of life.
