In Illinois, where private, for-profit prisons are already unlawful, privatization of civil detention centers are allowed. A for-profit corporation is working to get a bigger presence in the business of human incarceration. Incarceration, we believe, is a public function and needs to remain so. Making money off of each detainee and answering to shareholders sounds like modern day slavery. Tearing families apart before immigration reform must be stopped to allow for debate on a fair, human rights policy.
