Joshua Abaraham Norton returned to San Francisco on this day in 1859 and declared himself Emperor of These United States and subsequently Protector of Mexico. Seen by many as insane, if not a little eccentric, he truly tried to make a change. In his eyes he was attempting to rid the land of a corrupt government and other injustices he had witnessed, in mine he was more American than many politicians of his time and sincerely wanted to make a change.
