I am on probation for a nonviolent offense in the state of Oregon. I am also a wiccan, and my probation officer has declared that the main tool in my altar kit is illegal for me to possess. The athame is a double-edged knife, used for directing energy within the sacred circle, and is used for casting the circle. Traditionally, the blade is 6 inches, and the handle is 4 inches. Washington County Community Corrections insists that this tool be counted as a weapon, whereas I am allowed kitchen knives and construction tools of that size or larger. My faith does not allow me to draw blood with my athame, and specifies that if I do so, I must dispose of it.
Mr. President, tell Washington County that freedom of religion means ALL religions, and that a tool is a tool is a tool.
