Under the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) and the PATRIOT Act, secret courts have granted broad powers to the Justice department, CIA, NSA, and FBI. These rulings are classified as matters of national security.
We have a right to know what our government is capable of and to have access to the legal justifications. In Miranda v. Arizona, the Supreme Court held that an American kept ignorant of their rights was an American deprived of their rights.
This administration hasn't merely failed to justify its expansion of powers, its acted to hide those powers and make scrutiny impossible. The Snowden leaks have already undermined the justification that secrecy is required for these powers to be effective. We now petition the release of FISA rulings within 90 days.
