On February 5th, 2013, the Canadian government announced they would discontinue their penny due to costs associated with its' production. United States pennies are a unique reminder of a legendary President and represents the advancement of our country's rapidly-developed economy over the past century. They also cost around two cents per coin to produce.
But if the Treasury enforced a one-time public decommission of the penny, the coin could keep its value, enabling additional reduction of the deficit by President Obama and his Cabinet. Moreover, Americans concerned about our fiscal health could benefit from a community donation program with minimal program costs. Even with partial involvement from public and private sectors, the financial gains could be significant. "A Penny To Save Us."
