According to USA Today, the US Government made nearly $50,000,000,000 dollars in profit off of student loans last year.
This amounts to more profit than ANY company in the entire United States made last fiscal year. Even while students are struggling to pay off loans, the government is choosing to almost double interest rates. This will cause students to pay even more.
It would only make sense that these profits be funneled into financial aid programs, but this is not occurring. In fact, financial aid programs are receiving little to no funding at all leaving students with an even higher tuition bill. The government should decrease interest rates on loans and increase funding to federal financial aid programs. We cannot continue to screw over our next generation of workers for profits.
