The United States is currently the country with the most incarcerated citizens. Marijuana possession and distribution is a non-violent crime for which many otherwise law-abiding citizens are incarcerated each year. I propose that the American public and its government educate itself on the truth about marijuana and its harmless side effects as a medical prescription and a recreational drug. Let us be open about its psychological effects and remind our public that it is not a physically addictive substance. Let us also remind our public of the much more harmful legal, physically addictive substances, such as prescription medications that are opiate-based, derived from a plant(s), or cigarettes that are directly linked to fatal diseases. Its legalization would greatly support popular opinion
