We need to decriminalize illicit drugs, the war on drugs is not working. The possession of drugs and paraphernalia should no longer be criminal offenses. Instead drugs and paraphernalia should be seized. The amount of resources that are being used for prisons would best be channeled into treatment. Private prisons should be closed and opened as treatment facilities for all who need it. The guards should be trained as counselors. This would sustain economies built around our current detention centers. Police could then focus on person to person crimes.
