Marijuana is currently a schedule I drug, making it more dangerous than Vicodin, Ritalin, Ambien, Xanax, and medications containing codeine. This is very far from the truth. Like Alcohol once was, the responsible recreational use of Marijuana is currently prohibited in nearly all states except for Washington, Colorado, Oregon, and Alaska. The war on drugs was originally waged for political reasons, and now, the DEA profits and depends on marijuana crimes to keep it afloat. The only reason to continue criminalization is to keep Drug Enforcement Agents employed. How sad is that? Nonviolent, personal users are thrown in jail because the private prisons have contracts that require 80-100% occupancy. It's easier to arrest marijuana users than to solve murders.
