The federal law to criminalize the use of marijuana for recreational purposes has been inefficient, expensive, and simply did not work. It is incredibly easy for anyone to acquire and use marijuana illegally. If marijuana was to be legalized, the government would be able to tax and control the substance. This would boost the economy because instead of underground street sellers getting the money, it would go to the government as taxes. It would also allow the government to control the substance, meaning that illegal dealers won't be able to add harmful substances to the marijuana. Finally, it would decrease the amount of gang activity because gangs would no longer traffic the substance and fight over it, because marijuana would be accessible to anyone.
