The United States should stand with Israel, and help defend her during this time. Shortly after 9/11/01, America was ready to boycott/rename french fries over a much weaker issue: the refusal of an ally to help attack (not defend), another nation.
Condoning Israel's self-defense accomplishes nothing; anything less than that would have been recommending suicide. America needs to financially, morally, and militarily support Israel, as soon as possible.
