Defend the treaty rights of the Bad River and other northern Wisconsin tribes by prohibiting the Gogebic Taconite mine.

The Bad River and several other tribes assert that the state has no right to permit the enormous Gogebic Taconite mine planned by Chris Cline in the Penokee Hills of northern Wisconsin without their agreement since the site lies in “ceded territory,” an area covering a large portion of Northern Wisconsin where tribal members maintain special hunting, fishing and harvesting rights enshrined in federal treaties. The tribes maintain that the fish and their wild rice beds will be poisoned by the acid drainage from the mine.
The mine has been effectively sanctioned by the actions of Governor Scott Walker and the Republican legislature, and a vast region will be at risk. Mr President, you hold the power to cancel this mine in recognition of long held sovereign tribal treaty rights.
