The US Postal Service is facing major layoffs and closures of Post Offices across the country right now. This is as a direct result of 2006 legislation that requires the Postal Service to fund 75 years of pension benefits in a 10 year period, something that no other department of the Federal government has ever been required to do. This department is integral to our national security. It delivers our mail-in election ballots. Without this huge pension payment, it is self-sustaining and keeps delivery costs low. And, it has our largest public labor union. We ask the President to find a way to allow the Postal Service to balance it's budget without severe cuts and closures and to remove the outrageously huge pension payment requirement.
