The explosion of new technologies like facial recognition, smart phones, and big data analytics, have resulted in an unprecedented loss of control of our Personal Identification Information (PII). Who we are, what we do or buy, where we go, and who we are with should NOT be public information and should never be aggregated, consolidated, sold or disseminated without our knowledge and consent. We need UNIFORM Federal legislation that will define PII, limit its use to those legitimate purposes defined by law, provide for civil and criminal penalties, and mandate rules that collectors of PII must follow in the acquisition, use, and disposal of PII. All commercial collectors of PII must be required to register their activities in an industry funded reference database.
