The United States is the largest single donor of the United Nations Relief Works Agency (UNRWA) which is tasked with responsibility for care of Palestinian refugees and their descendants; in 2010, the US contribution to UNRWA was $228 million, with another $600 million pledged to support the Palestinian Authority in the West Bank and $300 million for Gaza.
The recent Gaza conflict has revealed UNRWA complicity with Hamas terrorist activity, where UNRWA-run schools and clinics have been used for military purposes, including tunnels designed for attacks on Israeli civilians. Moreover, UNRWA perpetuates, rather than solves, the Palestinian refugee problem.
UNRWA should be disbanded and care of Palestinians should be given to UNHCR, which handles all other refugee situations in the world.
