Giant Pandas are on the brink of extinction even in sanctuaries as a result of its poor diet choices (bamboo has almost nil nutritive value) and lifestyle choices (e.g., a refusal to mate). Natural selection disfavors creatures that have such basic issues with survival, and it is costing taxpayers tens of millions of dollars to continually observe the recalcitrant panda refuse to mate.
The same amount of money used to save Giant Pandas would be better spent on habitation conservation or on protection of biodiversity hotspots, which would benefit not just the species living there, but all species that may thrive under improved conditions.
