We respectfully ask President Obama to accelerate and give high priority to the U.S. Department of Justice investigation of the shooting of Zachary Hammond, an unarmed teen in Seneca, SC who was killed during a minor drug sting that ultimately led to the arrest of Toni Morton for the possession of 10 grams of marijuana.
The South Carolina State Law Enforcement Division has, thus far, refused to release police car dash cam footage that could shed light on the fatal event.
This is not a black, white, or other racial issue. It is a matter of police overstepping bounds and using excessive force for relatively minor offenses. The use of deadly force for minor crimes points to a culture of police incompetence and lack of training.
