The coffeemaker industry uses the word "cups" in illogical and misleading ways.
For example, a Bodum 8-cup French Press holds 32oz of liquid. Bodum is thereby defining a "cup" of coffee as 4 ounces. Meanwhile, a Cuisinart "12-cup" autodrip comes with a carafe that holds a paltry 64 ounces, thus defining a cup as 5.33 ounces. And so has bloomed a marketplace in which a Bodum cup is different from a Cuisinart cup, while both differ from a standard US 8oz cup. This, as should be clear, is madness.
Flagrant disregard for the integrity of standard US units can never be tolerated if there is to be collective faith in the measures that define our marketplaces. A cup is 8 ounces, now and forever.
