There are many petitions on both sides of the 2nd Amendment debate, but none address the blatant disregard for its true purpose.
"A well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed."
This is the exact language, as ratified by the States and authenticated by Thomas Jefferson on Dec 15, 1791. Yet too often, the first half is ignored, eliminating the conditional parameters for which it was originally inked.
We must either uphold the entire Amendment as was written – and require all owners of assault rifles and other weapons-of-combat to serve in an active-duty militia in support of our troops overseas – or conclude that the 2nd Amendment no longer serves a legitimate purpose in modern society.
