The Federal Communications Commission issued Net Neutrality rules in 2010, but they were struck down by a court this year.
Without Net Neutrality rules, Internet Service Providers (ISPs) can choose to make some websites easier to access - for instance, those that pay them fees, or those that are owned by the ISPs.
They can choose to make other websites harder to access- because they won't/can't pay fees, for political reasons, or because they offer content that competes with the ISPs' content.
Thankfully, the FCC can restore Net Neutrality by "reclassifying" Internet service as a "telecommunications service". But it's been dragging its feet, and threatening to take half-measures that won't get the job done. We need reclassification right away, before we lose the open Internet forever.
