The population of individuals choosing vegan or vegetarian diets is growing rapidly. The way in which food is processed and packaged should change in order to accommodate this increasing population. I propose that all food manufacturers be required to disclose whether any animal product is an ingredient in their food. One might argue that this population should simply read the ingredients, however, this often proves to be unhelpful. Many ingredients are ambiguous and could have been derived from plants or animals. As the allergy to peanuts grew tremendously, companies began to disclose whether their products contain nuts. The vegan and vegetarian population undoubtedly are entitled to the same clarity and peace of mind.
