On 04/17/15, Gao Yu, a 70-year-old Chinese journalist, was sentenced to 7 years in prison for allegedly leaking Doc. No. 9, an internal Chinese Communist Party document that urged greater censorship of liberal and reformist ideals.
Legal experts argue that the state secret law is vaguely worded and often used to suppress freedom of expression. Gao’s lawyer says there is no evidence that Gao had leaked the document.
The miscarriage of justice in Gao’s case infringes on Article 19 of the UN's Universal Declaration of Human Rights and Article 35 of China’s Constitution. To fulfill the USA’s duty as a permanent member of the UN Human Rights Council, we urge President Obama to demand that China immediately and unconditionally release Gao.
