The U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling in Citizens United v. FEC has saddled the democratic process with gargantuan amounts of money. What is most striking about the ruling is not how the “speech” it protects was upheld, but how the speech of ordinary individuals is now jeopardized. Now leaders must follow the money.
There is a proposed amendment to the Constitution that would shelter democracy from this onslaught, it is called the “Democracy for All Amendment” (S.J.Res.19). It would reinstate the FEC’s role in limiting campaign funds from corporations. I call on anyone who believes that each vote counts to publicly support this amendment so that the people can have a voice once again.
