There is currently no federally mandated grading scheme in the United States. The U.S Department of Education requiring that public education institutions denote a failing grade with the letter "L" rather than the "F" which is typically used would allow these institutions to keep most of their autonomy while simultaneously creating some sense of standardization among grading systems in U.S public education.
