State Rep. John Kavanagh recently introduced a strike-everything amendment to SB 1432, which would make it a crime for an individual to enter into a restroom or other gendered areas if their birth certificate does not match the sign on the door. This bill specifically targets the transgender community, as many transgender individuals have difficulty getting their birth certificates changed, with or without having had sex reassignment surgury. It would also require any individual who might be considered androgynous in appearance to carry their birth certificate to avoid being arrested for using the wrong restroom. For many transgender individuals, having to use their birth gender restroom is not only humiliating, but may also place them in danger of physical harm.
