Bewilderment. Confusion. Huh?
The range of perplexity runs the gamut when one describes a man, formally named Matt or Matthew, by the moniker "Matty Ice".
Sure, the nickname is purportedly meant to present its recipient with implicit praise for high levels of achievement, often used in the sporting realm. But for American footballer Matt Ryan, baseball pitcher Matt Harvey, professional cricketer Matt Hayden, and thespian Matt LeBlanc, there is only confusion as to the etymology of such a pernicious sobriquet.
Admittedly, "Matty Ice" probably makes sense for ice hockey star Matt Duchene. But that doesn't make it right.
Please help us repair the damages this confounding blight has caused to the respectable names of Matt and Matthew. Let's eradicate the use of the term, "Matty Ice".
