A recent article in the New York Times (http://nyti.ms/2gSDf0T) documented a string of atrocities committed in wake of President Rodrigo Duterte’s election. People have been indiscriminately murdered by police for being suspected of committing drug offenses. Many of these people were not armed, were not committing violent offenses, and had recently registered for a government program to receive help for drug addiction. This wave of extra-judicial killings is a gross violation of human rights. We respectfully call on the president to denounce these killings in the strongest terms and to consider measures, such as trade sanctions, to send a strong message that human rights violations will not be tolerated.
