Jonathan Pollard, a civilian Navy intelligence analyst, was convicted in 1987 selling classified materials to Israel, and was suspected of selling information to the then-apartheid regime in South Africa as well as Pakistan. Information he stole regarding China was used by his wife to further her own business interests. The Israeli government compounded his betrayal by trading US intelligence secrets to the then-USSR in exchange for Jewish immigrants.
Jonathan Pollard betrayed the United States, his oath to support and defend the Constitution, and non-disclosure agreements he made with the government as part of his guilty plea. While the Israel may consider him a hero (and no doubt such a welcome awaits in Jerusalem), he should fulfill his sentence of life in prison here.
