Mr. President, please push for the expansion of the AmeriCorps VISTA Program to give significant numbers of young people and underemployed Americans the ability to help staff emergency relief teams. Mother Nature will continue to bombard us and we are poorly prepared with the bureaucratic monstrosities we have in place (i.e. Red Cross, FEMA, National Guard, state governments). We need agile and dynamic teams to mobilize and take action when and where needed to help bridge the institutional bureaucracies. Reinvent AmeriCorps (i.e. today's WPA) to make it relevant for millions of Americans; the next generation of Americans can help their fellow Americans in need while obtaining the logistical and organizational skill sets that will empower our nation to succeed in the future.
