deregulate firearm suppressors. Make them available for purchase with a NICS background check, like a firearm.

Created by C.M. on March 10, 2013

Deregulate suppressors (silencers) as NFA items by amending the National Firearms Act. Eliminate the $200 tax and the requirement to submit ATF form 4. Make suppressors available for purchase from all firearm dealers, pending successful completion of a form 4473 and NICS background check.

Suppressors are primarily a safety device. They would help prevent cumulative hearing loss, which is a growing health problem in the US. They also reduce noise pollution, and typically increase accuracy of the host firearm.

Contrary to Hollywood's interpretation, they do not reduce sound signature to the point where one could discharge a firearm in a building unnoticed.

This current regulation of suppressors is draconian, and is rooted in legislation based on fear, ignorance, and misunderstanding.
