Design and build a Space Elevator

If we the people, and the govt. were to vote to reopen and assign more funding to NASA and/or DARPA to create a working space elevator, our dreams of space travel and planetary colonization would become more real. Right now transporting materials into space is extremely expensive and rely upon vast amounts of fossil files to get us there. However, if a space elevator were created, the transportation of people and materials into space would become much easier. So, in order for our race to create the infrastructure needed to expand beyond our planet, we would need a more economical means of getting there, hence a Space Elevator.
