Each year my family gets together for Thanksgiving. For us, it's our big holiday. But each year, my mother has to work the Wednesday before, on Black Friday (at an unnatural morning hour), and the entire weekend following. For the last decade, she has been unable to get the days off. Her retail job manager will not let her take the day off.
She is 64 years old. She has been one of their star employees for years, but still makes minimum wage.
I've had enough of this abuse of my mother. I'm sure many people in retail jobs have had enough of working on Black Friday, the day most people want to spend eating turkey leftovers with family. Can we switch it to Black Saturday?
Capitalism can survive a one-day retail Blackout. I call for a National No Shopping Family Day.
