Civil rights and liberties are a cornerstone of any great democracy. Though the struggle for civil rights is an eternal, year-round struggle the second half of June has the distinction of being the anniversary of two major milestones in the progress toward a more perfect society. Those are June 19th (Juneteenth, the anniversary of the abolition of slavery) and June 26th (the anniversary of the supreme court's decision upholding marriage equality). These two dates should serve as bookends for a period of reflection, recognition, and action on the struggle of civil rights and liberties past, present, and future. I propose official recognition of this period so that we may all reflect on how far we have come, where we are, and how we will move toward the creation of a more perfect society.
