Graveyard Pond contains the remains of many United States service members who died during the War of 1812. After the Battle of Lake Erie in 1813, the victorious U.S. fleet returned to their base on Presque Isle where many died due to disease and hardship during the Winter of 1813-1814. Many of these deceased service members were "buried" in what is now called Graveyard Pond and they remain there to this day.
The sacrifices of these individuals should be remembered and honored by designating their resting place as a U.S. National Cemetery.
