Deficit reduction is agreed by all sides to be a worthy national goal. The relationship between deficit reduction and the economy already exists in the real word. We cannot 'cut our way to prosperity.' Deficit reduction must be governed by how much can be done with a minimum of economic disruption. Cast this real world relationship into government policy similar to the way the Federal Reserve now governs it's decisions regarding interest rates in relation to employment data. Make decisions based on reality, not ideology.
