We need a more concentrated, open, perhaps crowd based discussion and plan for preventing asteroid strikes. Less drones looking down, more eyes looking up. January 28th an asteroid was spotted by amateurs that will pass Earth underneath the layer of satellites we have powering our communications.
This is the closest we've ever seen an asteroid come. Half a football length in size, it would level a city and kill millions on impact.
The amateur spotting gave us about two weeks notice.
We need more eyes looking up and planning a response that can deter an asteroid.
